This is the question people ask before they start, and it is usually asked in the wrong order. The real question is not which plan to buy. It is what you are actually trying to do, because for a good number of people the free account does it, and for others there is one specific feature that decides it.
Claude is Anthropic's product and you buy it from them, not from us. We do build a setup that runs on Claude, and it needs a Pro plan or higher. You can ignore that entirely if you are only here to work out which plan suits you.
What the free account genuinely does
More than most people expect.
On a free account you can talk to Claude in plain language on the web, in the app and on your phone. You can paste in emails, documents, spreadsheets, PDFs and images, and it can read them, summarise them, answer questions about them and draft from them. You can have it write and rewrite emails, plans, lists and documents. You can have it research something and set out the facts in plain terms.
You can also give it a preference file, which is the single biggest upgrade available to anyone at any plan level. Hand it one short file describing your household, your work, the shape of your week and how you like to be spoken to, and every conversation starts already knowing you. That costs nothing.
What you will hit is usage limits. Free accounts have a cap on how much you can do in a given window. If you use it lightly, a few conversations a day, you may rarely notice. If you sit down for a long working session, you will notice.
What money actually buys
Two things, and it is worth separating them, because people usually only think about the first.
Room to work. A paid plan raises the usage limits. If you are stopping mid-task and waiting, that is what you are paying to remove. This is the reason most people upgrade, and it is a reasonable one.
Specific features. This is the part that decides it for some people regardless of how much they use it. A few of the things that make an assistant feel like an assistant rather than a chat window sit behind a paid plan.
Skills are the clearest example. A skill is a saved set of instructions Claude follows for a particular task, so you stop re-explaining how you want your weekly briefing put together or how your invoices are worded. Using and uploading skills in the Claude app is a paid plan feature. If a repeatable, personalised setup is the whole point for you, that matters more than the usage limits do.
The other one is Claude working inside your browser. On a paid plan Claude can work inside Outlook or Gmail on the web while you are signed in, clicking and typing for you and pausing for your approval before anything is sent. That is not on the free plan.
Connecting your email and calendar
This is where people get confused, so it is worth being precise.
Connecting an account is what lets Claude see your real inbox and calendar rather than only what you paste in. It is optional, and it is not the same thing as paying. We keep a longer plain language list of what needs a connector and what does not.
As things stand, the Microsoft 365 connector for Outlook email and calendar is available on all plans, including free. Reading your email and calendar is included. Sending and editing need write access to be turned on, which in a work account is an administrator's decision, not yours. You can connect a Google account for Gmail and Calendar and read and draft in the same way.
The Claude for Outlook add in, the one that lives inside Outlook itself, is a different thing again. It is in beta and it needs a paid plan.
So it is entirely possible to be on a free account with your calendar connected, asking what your week looks like and getting a real answer. That surprises people, and it is often enough.
A way to decide
Rather than comparing feature lists, try answering three questions honestly.
Will you use it most days, or now and then? Most days points to paid, because you will meet the limits and stopping mid-thought is genuinely annoying. Now and then points to free.
Do you want it to remember how you work, or are you happy to explain each time? If you want saved skills doing repeatable jobs your way, that is a paid feature and it is the deciding one.
Does it need to act, or only to think? Reading, drafting, planning and summarising are available to you either way. Working inside your browser on your behalf is not.
The order we would suggest
Start free, whatever you are eventually aiming at. Write your preference file, connect your calendar if you want to, and use it for a fortnight on real things rather than test questions.
You will find out two things quickly. Whether it fits how you actually work, which is not obvious in advance. And which wall you hit first, the usage limit or a feature you cannot reach. Upgrade because you hit a specific wall, not because a comparison table made you feel like the free one was the lesser choice.

Anthropic can change plans, limits and connector availability whenever they like, and they do. Check their current pages before you commit to anything on the strength of this article.
One last thing, and it is the part the plan comparison will not tell you. Whichever one you land on, what decides whether it is actually useful is the same either way: how much it knows about you before you ask it anything. That is worth more than the difference between the plans.
